Volunteer of the Year

MBSA has established an annual award to recognize an outstanding volunteer. 2012 marks the first year this award was presented. Nominations are submitted to the MBSA each spring and the award is presented at the Annual General Meeting.

  • 2012 volunteer of the year- Doug Penner

  • Doug has proven his commitment to the Manitoba Blind Sports Association over the years. He is been volunteering in the office once/week since March 2009 and has helped coordinate our volunteers for various Mall Displays and Bingos. He is always willing to step forward to help out whenever necessary, filling in as a last-minute volunteer when we had trouble filling a spot. He helped fill out the application form for our Grey Cup Raffle ticket fundraiser and has taken care of administering the fundraiser and contacting the winners after the event. He is been involved as an athlete at the Provincial, National and International levels and has helped organize several Western Championships. MBSA would like to thank Mr. Doug Penner for all his work with MBSA.

  • 2013 volunteer of the year - John Gunn

  • GunnJohn has proven his commitment to the Manitoba Blind Sports Association over the years. He is been volunteering in the pool with our Swim program for over ten years, starting when Vivian McDonald was the swim coach and has continued under the guidance of Coach Norm Carriere. He is always willing to hop into the pool with our young swimmers and help out where needed. As a chaperone, he attended swim meets in B.C. and Warroad, MN for athletes with a disability and helped build the MBSA Showdown table. We thank you Mr. John Gunn.

  • 2015 volunteer of the year - Kim Hekl

  • Kim has proven her commitment to the Manitoba Blind Sports Association over the years. She’s been volunteering with our Golf program since 2005 and has worked with various golfers with a variety of vision impairments (B1, B2 and B3). She’s attended several Provincial events and 9 hole fun events over the years and has helped recruit new volunteers into the MBSA. Her infectious laugh and commitment to our program has been invaluable. We thank you Ms. Kim Hekl.
